Hand-poured candles.

Guest post from ETC.

Lisa Wright talks about her new business Just enough beach, started with help from the NEIS program at ETC.

We create candles and diffusers that smell as beautiful as they look. Our natural soy candles are hand-poured in Yamba and inspired by cocktails we love to share. Scents include Lychee Martini, Malibu Crush, Passioned Lime, Rose Bellini, Peachy Punch, Salted Caramel, White Russian and Lemongrass Margarita. The unique packaging is designed by me and hand-wrapped.

Testing has taken over a thousand hours; to find the perfect balance of soy wax, lead-free cotton wicks and fragrance, so our candles have a strong cold and hot throw. We are proud to say our candles smell gorgeous when not lit and then burn with an amazing scent too.

It’s lovely to make something with your own hands and it’s important to build a job you love doing that will pay the bills and hopefully employ more people down the track.

The Cocktails & Candles Workshops we offer are a highlight. Ladies join us for an afternoon, pouring their own candle and sipping the cocktails that inspired the scents. We’ve sold out all our events so far which is very exciting! There is another one coming up at Irons and Craig in Yamba!

We have Candle Club, where members receive free signature wrap and delivery and we surprise them with a different scent, depending on choices they make when signing up. It’s great for gifts for girlfriends or to treat yourself with a new scent arriving in the mail every 1, 2 or 3 months.

NEIS training has helped me see opportunities. I’ve just gained some workshops with the local Council teaching kids how to decorate candles – which booked out very quickly. It’s exciting to share and create things by hand and do it within my local community.

A new business idea has to be different in the market. People love the idea of candles with cocktail-inspired scents. Our Malibu Crush candle is inspired by a Pina Colada – it smells like Tahitian coconut shaken with tropical fruits. Our Passioned Lime candle is inspired by a mojito with a scent of golden passionfruit muddled with zesty lime.

Coupling these scents with our unique packaging is an intriguing mix. People just have to try them. Once they do, they love the scent – for themselves and as gifts.

Originally I thought there wasn’t anything that I could learn from NEIS training because I have run my own business before. But I learnt quite a lot, especially about finance and business planning. It has really helped me to think about everything in more depth.

The mentoring and the group of people I did the course with at ETC were amazing. They would offer great constructive feedback and helped me believe that I could do this.

I’ve also had great help from Debbie my mentor – she’s been wonderful and very encouraging. I think she will be a friend for life. I’m still calling her with questions and getting her feedback. She is invaluable.

If you have a new business idea, take the first step to self-employment with free NEIS training. NEIS is an Australian Government sponsored new business training program, to assist with self-employment. Use the postcode finder for your local provider and contact them for a chat.
