Business and tech consulting.

The business of doing business is Brock Presland’s work, thanks to his entrepreneurial spirit and NEIS training. Even as a schoolboy Brock was a businessman; importing products to sell at school – from mobile phones to jewellery. Brock’s interests then developed to online pursuits, winning the National Youth Week DesignIT Competition in 2012. From there he taught himself web development, as a way of producing great ideas for sites without the high developer costs. Before long people were asking him to create sites for them.

Brock had a lot of ideas for online tools and functions. There were also a lot of ways these ideas could be implemented. It was time to get some help. Brock applied for the NEIS training program with Konekt in Launceston. Once he worked through the NEIS planning and research process, he identified the best services to offer in his new business, Top Dog Commerce. Brock explains, “I did the NEIS program so I could make sure I was on the right track.”

Through research, he found plenty of website building platforms that were ‘easy to use’, but there was an untapped market for a product offering more. Brock also found a need for local developers that could support their work with business development services.

There was a need for a cost-effective tool to create and efficiently manage entire websites (even quicker than ‘click and drag’ site builders). The complexity of the online business software currently available was where Brock focussed his efforts. This new tool would integrate with customer relationship management, basic accounting, e-commerce, social media, and marketing funnels. That’s a lot of function to coordinate but Brock expects to have a Beta version by next month. Watch this space!

Since completing his NEIS training, Brock has been invited to each new NEIS program in his area as a guest speaker. He talks to NEIS classes about websites, digital marketing, business strategy, product design and product development. Top Dog Commerce also organise and run monthly networking events for NEIS participants past, present and future. This has helped open the door for business development consulting work; helping clients refine strategy, plan new product and create the online structure to bring it all together.

Brock says “I feel my most noteworthy successes since completing the NEIS training, are my clients. Seeing what they are doing and the impact I’ve had on their business lives is just incredible, and has to be my favourite part of everything I do.”
