Our recent conference was a great success, offering a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with fellow providers and their teams. Held at the picturesque Stamford Grand Hotel in Glenelg, the beachfront location added to the event’s appeal and provided a relaxing backdrop for our activities.
Networking Evening
The conference commenced on Monday evening with a networking event. Attendees
mingled and shared insights in a casual setting, setting the stage for the productive
discussions to follow.
Conference Day
The following day was packed with insightful presentations and discussions:
- Opening Address by Assistant Minister Andrew Leigh: Assistant Minister Leigh kicked off the day with an inspiring speech, emphasising the importance of our collective efforts and sharing updates on the government’s vision for self-employment and workforce initiatives.
- Claudia Chavez from Presens – “The Inspiration to the Action”. Claudia discussed the journey from initial inspiration to actionable steps in self-growth, while providing practical strategies to motivate and guide our clients effectively.
- Markus Hugenschmidt from Jam Cyber – ‘Cyber Security’. Markus
highlighted the critical importance of cyber security in today’s digital age, offering insights into protecting both our operations and those of our clients from cyber threats. - Wilhelmina Duyvestyn from the National AI Centre: Wilhelmina delved into
advancements in artificial intelligence and how these technologies can be leveraged to enhance businesses when commencing self-employment. - Rebecca Weatherill from Workplace Wellbeing: Rebecca focused on the
significance of mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, sharing strategies to foster a supportive environment for both yourself and staff. - Paolo Cardelli from Workspeak – ‘ Emotional Intelligence in Mentoring’ . Paolo explored the role of emotional intelligence in effective mentoring, offering techniques to build stronger, more empathetic relationships with clients.
- Michael Nuciforo from Thriday – Presentation on an Accounting Package for Sole Traders: Michael introduced Thriday, an innovative accounting solution tailored for sole traders, highlighting how it can simplify financial management for our participants.
Interactive Sessions
- Community of Practice Facilitated by DEWR: This session provided a platform for providers to share best practices, discuss challenges, and collaborate on solutions to common issues.
- Sit-Down Chat with the ATO: Facilitated by Assistant Secretary Victoria Benz, this discussion with a representative from the Australian Taxation Office covered important updates and provided clarity on tax-related matters affecting our participants.
National Self-Employment Awards 2024
In the evening, after enjoying an fantastic Dinner, we celebrated the National Self-
Employment Awards sponsored by BizCover. We honoured outstanding achievements in four categories:

Closing Thoughts
The conference was not only informative but also rejuvenating, thanks to the coming
together of old and new providers. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to connect, learn, and
celebrate together. We look forward to implementing the insights gained and continuing our
important work supporting self-employed individuals.
